Reverse Engineering

Every now and again, the situation arises where the detail drawings for a particular part are no longer available, perhaps an obsolete item, or where the information simply can’t be found. In such cases, the solution could be “reverse engineering” where we start with the original part, sometimes even in-situ, and work backwards to produce a new component.

We have long experience in this field and maintain a comprehensive range of portable precision measuring equipment, including FARO arm, for this purpose.

Obviously, this is a bespoke service so the best way to describe is to demonstrate with a case study.

Case Study

This “one of a kind” special purpose extrusion system, used in a food processing application in Asia, needed the twin screws, critical components, to be replaced. The original manufacturer was no longer in existence and although there was an outline specification there were no manufacturing drawings. PML worked backwards from the original machine parts, using precision Faro Arm technology to create a three dimensional model of the system. After producing and installing, on site, an initial trial assembly in lightweight aluminium to prove fit and function, PML then manufactured and installed a fully matched pair of production screws in 316 stainless steel.
